Nobody Left Behind
In a post-apocalyptic world, friends, Drew and Patrick, continue to pave their way across the East Coast, scavenging for resources. During one of these raids, Drew stumbles upon another survivor, but in a high and paranoid state, immediately goes into flight or fight mode and shoots the girl dead. Haunted by the event and reminiscing on the past, Drew suggests that the boys return to a shore house at Bethany Beach where they grew up. Though reluctant, Patrick agrees, and the boys journey to the beach. Upon arrival, nostalgia blinds Drew as Patrick grows tireless in searching for supplies and finding no success. At wit’s end, Patrick confronts Drew for his instability to which Drew refutes Patrick’s ignorance and lack of consideration as a friend. Soon after, Patrick takes their car and leaves the beach, only to meet his end at the hands of a few scavengers on the road. Although Drew finally finds his peace, it comes at the sacrifice of losing his partner and now being alone.
DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
"It was March 14th, 2020 when a small group of friends and I gathered around in my apartment living room to watch the premiere of our latest short film, “Nobodies”. As the film concluded our phones simultaneously buzzed with notifications, and upon checking we realized that our experience as college students was about to change immensely. The email was sent out by our administration letting us know that all classes were being suspended for two weeks and classes would be moving online. At the time we all thought it was pretty awesome. Two weeks of not having to go to class in person? That’s fantastic! But as it was for everybody, the reality slowly dawned on us that our hiatus from in-person classes would be much longer than anticipated.
Cut to three weeks later and everybody has returned to their parents’ homes and the rest of our semester has shifted online. We all felt so isolated and restricted as we were only able to communicate with each other over virtual chat rooms. Lonely and with nothing to do we started to talk about various film ideas and ambitions. During this, we reflected on the release of “Nobodies” and the irony of our post-apocalyptic film being released right before the world essentially shut down. This opened up more discussions regarding the short and possibilities to expand upon the story of the characters Drew and Patrick, examining how isolation and trauma would affect the relationship between these two friends.
After many iterations and drafts of the story, we decided to embark on a four-month endeavor that was shooting the film. The nature of the film’s flashbacks and various intercutting of seasons made it so that a prolonged filming period is necessary. Being able to get back to working together and making films during this time was a blessing in and of itself since so much time had been spent indoors and steering away from in-person interaction. Nobody Left Behind is a story of growth, and although it reaches a tragic end, the story emphasizes the importance of companionship and being able to be open about your emotions, especially in times of isolation."
